Quick Shoot: Fujifilm 18mm f1.4 vs Panasonic 15mm f1.7
Panasonic’s 15/1.7 is a compact and lightweight lens with decent image quality. Before Fujifilm introduced 18/1.4, the only other lens with the same focal length was the 18/2, which was widely criticised for its slow focusing and mediocre image quality. 18/1.4 is generally regarded as one of the highest quality lenses in Fuji’s latest group of 1.4 lenses, with the addition of weather sealing and linear motors which greatly improves auto focusing. So which of the two is better in practice?
From my personal experience, the 15/1.7 has more advantages than the Fujifilm 18/1.4: the difference in image quality is not obvious (especially since the images are only used for social networking on mobile phones), weather sealing only makes sense under certain conditions, and the weight of the 18/1.4 is almost triple that of the 15/1.7. Unfortunately it seems that Panasonic and Olympus are moving away from the M43‘s original purpose of being portable, leaving the lens’ compactness not fully utilised. I travelled to Mt Macedon with Fuji X-T5 and Olympus E-M1 iii, the overall weight is 927 grams for Fuji and 695 grams for Olympus, the 15/1.7 was first released to match Panasonic’s GM series, if it is GM5 + 15/1.7, the weight is only a mere 326 grams.
In term of image quality for my use, I can’t see a noticeable difference when there’s plenty of light, Fuji’s 40MP sensor is very demanding on the lens, I guess it can be difficult to maintain a high level of image quality if lens is made small. Also, Fuji’s RAW look more or less blurry in post-processing for foliage, especially greens.

Autumn Leaves: Fujifilm 50R vs Olympus E-M1 iii / zoom
Переглядів 513 місяці тому
There's a big difference of sensor size between M43 and Medium Format, however, how do they compare in real life with good light? I visited Dandenonrg Ranges with Olympus E-M1 iii and Fujifilm GFX 50R, on E-M1 iii there's the Lecia DG 12-60mm attached, on 50R it's the kit 35-70mm, both are zoom lenses. With good light, E-M1 iii performed well against 50R, there are differences in term of tonal ...

Beautiful work. There are a lot of people on youtube and other social media who claim to be doing "street photography," but who clearly have no knowledge or understanding of the genre. Your work stands head and shoulders above theirs, and clearly belongs in the long legacy of true "street photography" that aims to capture the decisive moment. Congratulations and thank you.

Excellent work. You seem to capture some of Daido Moriyama's message of chaos and balance. The use of tilt shots and simple shapes among the random also reminds me of the master's work. He is a difficult artist to characterize and I admire your courage to attempt this. Thank you for sharing your work and interesting thought project.

I find the GX85 to be one of my best cameras to shoot B&W with. Between the L. Monochrome profile and zebra stripes making it really easy to quickly expose knowing what will be crushed, blown out, or neither. I've tried to swap to different cameras so many times only to come back to my GX85 and G9 basically for zebra stripes for stills. I also have both a Sony A6000 and A6500 that both have zebras for stills that work more or less identically to Panasonic's implementation. There are other cameras with blinkies, but it's nowhere near as clean as zebras. You ask why it doesn't exist for Nikon and others, despite the feature existing in the cameras for video mode, and people just reply like robots/sheep with "that's a video thing" instead of "you know what, I don't know why a way of making shooting more convenient isn't there". The same can be said for why can't we have live waveforms instead of histograms for still shooting? The answer remains the same, "that's a video thing", despite waveforms being great for quickly visualizing exposure across a frame regardless of if it's a video or still frame. I really like the manual dial aesthetic, but I have to constantly ask myself if that aesthetic is worth the large cost to add to my gear. I'm tempted to pick up a Z fc used as a trade in after loving the design, loving preserve highlights, and liking how Z mount is getting some APS-C attention from third parties. Lack of zebras annoys me; I basically use spot metering for my shadows then dial back using zebras as an indicator. Preserve highlights bumped up a stop or two would probably get similar results.

Olympus’s camera division is a classic example of how Japanese stubborness, inflexibility and pride, combined with the highly destructive corporate culture of “Japanese Groupism”, resulted in a complete MARKETING FAILURE, that created a very poorly perceived brand image. If Olympus had learned only 30-40% of marketing tactics from Sony, Olympus would have progressed much better. In terms of highly effective desperate marketing strategies using social media to advertise itself, no camera mftrs can beat SONY😂😂

Long ago, those old-school photographers such as Winogrand, Leiter, Bresson etc were constrained by technology and had no choice but to use simple film cameras with fixed lenses. Now, its very different. Photography and cinematography are all about telling stories via different visual aesthetics created by clever usage of different focal length lenses. Hence, it doesnt make sense to buy any overly-hyped, over-priced camera having only a fixed lens in today’s society. People have been brainwashed by American social media and marketing. Similarly, even artists use different mediums (water, oil, guache etc) for different visual aesthetics. A genuine modern photographer should not limit oneself to only shooting with 1 fixed lens. Even a gun lover is not contented owning only 1 pistol. He often wants to play with different firearms of different calibres. An SUV owner might also want a fun, weekend car for the twisties. Probably, thats why even Ricoh had to introduce a GR3X. As an owner of X100V and XE4, I love and respect Lumix (esp G9 and GX9) because Lumix has never brainwashed the market via over-hyping their cameras. Long ago, the not over-priced, non-hyped G9 already had weather sealing, a huge, bright high resolution, high refresh rate EVF, 2 card slots and IBIS..and great video..all in ONE package. For Fujifilm, when they give you a great tasting pasta, they cleverly dont give you the shavings of black truffles and Parmigiano Reggiano😂.

Thank You for this amazing and innovative concept - I use my iPhone SO much no one see's it - next to my G100 the creative depths of my large DSLR's also bring the issues of carrying such kit around.. One can understand the weight but in some cases the fear of being approached, or noticed can also make for a bad time. Where cell phone is like I said so easy to over look as it is SO common. Many thanks, I have Subscribed and hit the bell, and downloaded your app and will start testing it.. Again many thanks

Mine doesn't focus to infinity like your blog says, its more like 2m focus point, which in a hyperfocal calculator gives you a range of approx. 1.3m to 4.5m. Which is ideal for street photography, but also limited at the long end. This lens would need to be set to focus at 4m to achieve infinity focus. That would start acceptable sharpness at 1.8m (6 feet), so mine must have been set too near. But that will probably be good, at least for stealth shooting. I get bokeh on mine, especially at the side.

I might consider it if it were on sale here and a lot cheaper. 200-300 usd is too much, cheap bodycap lenses with mediocre quality are typically under a 100. You can get acceptable f2.8 AF lenses for that money for other systems.
